To restore the long-lost balance between offense and defense on the basketball court, the NBA officially announced its officiating priorities and rule focus areas for the 2026-27 season. In recent years, offensive players have developed ever-evolving skills, putting defenders at a constant disadvantage. The league plans to overhaul the chaos on the court this coming season, making "strict anti-flopping" a core mission while introducing a clear-cut "4F" standard to limit offensive players from using their non-shooting hand to push off. The goal? Give defenders a fair shot at competing.

You've seen it countless times: an offensive player, during a step-back jumper or drive, uses their off-hand to shove the defender away and create space. It's been a nightmare for defenders. After reviewing hundreds of cases during the offseason, the NBA's Competition Committee decided to put Monty McCutchen, Senior Vice President of Referee Development and Training, in charge of rolling out the new "4F" officiating scale.

McCutchen stressed that this standard aims to improve consistency in calls, ensuring defenders don't get unfairly penalized because of illegal pushes by opponents. In other words, those "baiting fouls" to create space won't fly anymore.

Besides offensive pushing, the league is once again zeroing in on flopping. Whether you're on offense or defense, any attempt to fool officials with exaggerated acting will face strict enforcement. And when it comes to jump shots, there are now specific guidelines on defensive closeouts and landing zone protection—all to keep players safe from injury in the heat of battle.

On the team tactics front, those "screens" that happen over 200 times per game are also getting a makeover. McCutchen said refs will be watching closely for illegal screens where the screener extends their arms horizontally, deliberately pushing the defender toward the midcourt or sideline. Meanwhile, any malicious collisions, blocks, or holds off the ball will be strictly penalized—players deserve the freedom to move without interference.

As for driving lanes, James Jones, Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations, didn't mince words: the league will scrutinize offensive players who intentionally throw their body into defenders to draw fouls. But if the offensive player has a clear path, defenders can't illegally contact them either. Jones noted that these high-frequency areas often have a huge impact on the game. By reshaping the rules, the league hopes to bring back the purest balance between power and speed, making sure both sides compete on a level playing field.
